The good old Mercedes Benz Vito van is all set to don a greener look. Besides being rechristened to the Vito E-CELL electric van, the van specifically aimed to be used in inner-city operations and for particularly environmentally sensitive areas has a standard roof with a wheelbase of 3200 mm. The company has already started producing 100 units of these vehicles; while 2,000 more will be sculpted the following year, 2011. The van has an awesome range of 130 km (81 miles) with a payload of 900 kg (1,984 lbs) subject to equipment and a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). All this makes the van just ideal for use in cities. Using a permanent synchronous electric motor with a continuous output of 60 kW and a peak output of 70 kW, the van has a maximum torque of 280 N·m (207 lb-ft).

The lithium-ion batteries that store all the energy required to make the green Vito’s wheels spin are snuggled up under the load compartment floor. A green van for city use to keep the air clean, the Vito E-CELL sure will grab the attention of commercial buyers.
