Boating in the Sun Moon Lake in Japan is no longer a matter of noise, engine fumes and smelly odors. From the use of what was know as the Thao canoe in the early ages and diesel powered wooden ships, fiber-glass boats with a capacity of carrying 50 people are being used today to tour the Sun Moon Lake. These boats however tend to pollute the lakes environment due to emissions, smoke and other factors. To overcome this, the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration has of late introduced solar powered boats on a trial basis. The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration has been studying the practicability of using solar energy to power up boats used in the lake since 2005. With recent technological breakthroughs, this has been made possible today. Also, hikes in oil prices in the world today make this an extremely practical idea. So the next time you visit Japan, make sure you sail on one of these eco-friendly vessels!
