Fuel cell technology could soon show up one just about every vehicle out there in the near future, thanks to this new development, giving an impetus to this energy-friendly technology. Unlike traditional fuel cells, these small fuel cells called solid-oxide fuel cell generate electricity from just about any fuel, be it gasoline or natural gas! However, the only drawback behind these is the fact that they need to be heated up to a sweltering 1,600 degrees to get them started. A stack of these could power a whole car and plugging it to a battery system could turn your car into a hybrid more fuel-efficient than even the Chevrolet Volt!

Also, newer versions of SOFCs are expected to show up soon that work at lower temperatures and could initially be used to power up cabs of tractor-trailers, by decreasing the use of an idling engine to power up air-conditioners, in turn helping save fuel.
