• Madrid to recycle old Phone booths into EV charging stations

  • old_Phone_booths.jpg Most of us have mobile phones today, so being in touch has never been easier when compared to just a decade and a half ago. Those were the days when answering machines and public telephone booths were the only way to keep your friends or family updated. Voice mail has replaced the answering machine, but what does one do with the rarely used phone booths around a city? Madrid seems to have an innovative solution to this now popular problem among growing cities. Transforming the phone booth into a recharging station for your next hybrid or electric car is an ideal utilization of the once popular-now goliaths, dotting the city street landscape.

The Spanish government has initiated the MOVELE pilot project, managed by the Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDEA). This project will spend over $2 million to build over 500 public recharging stations over the next two years in Madrid, Seville and Barcelona. Phone booths are usually located next to roadways and feature a built-in electrical supply, 30 stations will be transformed into EV charging points around Madrid. Wonder if these will come with the new universal charger for mobile phones, to charge my often depleting mobile phone??…
