• Carbon material coating on plows leads to 30% less-fuel use for tractors

Hard disks have never had too much to do with farming. However, researchers have picked up a material related to hard disks that could make the process of farming a lot greener and energy-efficient! Using a carbon material commonly used to protect hard-disks, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for the Mechanics of Materials in Freiberg, Germany, have come up with a pretty functional way to increase fuel efficiency during farming operations, particularly plowing. Owing to friction caused between the plow and the soil, more fuel is used. Using the carbon coating on the plows however helps decrease the friction by up to 50%, which consequently decreases fuel consumption of tractors by about 30%.

Farmers in Germany alone use about 2.6 million gallons of fuel annually to support their farms, and this carbon material could just help bring the numbers down drastically!
