• Amtrak plans for less electricity consuming locomotives

Amtrak has rolled up its sleeves and is busy preparing for some greener trains that will hit the rails sometime soon. The new locomotives ordered by Amtrak will use lesser electricity than the current ones and 70 of these will be brought from 2013 to 2019 to be used on the Northeast corridor between Washington and Boston and the Keystone Corridor between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. These will replace those good old 64 locomotives, some of them from the 80’s with rail experiences of 3.5 million miles. The shiny new locomotives are built by Siemens AG costing $466 million. The new locomotives will also use regenerative breaking systems that will help send back energy generated from breaking to the grid.

We all know how much better and cleaner it is to travel by a train than a car. If people began to use wide spread mass transit systems and leave their cars home, it sure would lead to a decrease in air pollution, and with eco-friendly trains like these, transport will sure head down a greener route.
