• A greener alternative to charcoal in Haiti

Haiti has suffered due to the recent natural disaster that struck the beautiful little island sometime ago. Floods and landslides have been taking lives and destroying property time and again. This is mainly because of the country losing 97% of its forests. So to do away with all the pain and trouble, a Haitian factory came up with an alternative to the tree burning fuel, charcoal. This new fuel is made from briquettes made from trash. This is a cheaper and greener alternative to using charcoal as a cooking fuel. The garbage is recycled in a low tech recycling unit set up in the factory located on a hill in Port-au-Prince.

Shredded paper and cardboard is put into a giant mortar and pestle where it is mashed into a mixture and dried in metal moulds to make the briquettes. Haiti is recovering, gradually but with a greener mindset.
