It takes a lot to be a college with a green heart. And that’s what the world realized when The Princeton Review released its 2011 Green Rating Honor Roll. 703 colleges submitted their environmental information out of which as less as 18 colleges actually found a spot on their list. This means that the remaining 685 were somewhat delusional when it comes to how green a college can actually get. The Yale, Harvard, Northeastern, University of California, Berkeley, and West Virginia University all found a spot on the list with an overall commitment to environmental issues, a sustainability-minded curriculum, and students that are dedicated to all things green, and not just a green roof or a LEED certification. Universities have their own unique green features too. Take the University of Maine for instance that provides free bikes for faculty, staff, and student use and the Harvard University, with 62 building projects soon to have LEED certifications and a 55% recycling rate.

The Green Rating Honor Roll is indeed stringent when it comes to who’s going to make it on the list. So the next time you look out for your college on the list, make sure the institution has a heart that’s truly green.
