Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd, from Shanghai, has come up with a way to sail the seas using solar power. The world’s largest producer of crystalline silicon solar panels have come up with a world’s largest producer of crystalline silicon solar panels using technology developed by Australia-based Solar Sailor. The vessel, christened the Suntech-Guosheng solar sailor, will pave the way for a solar shipping industry in future. The solarsail hybrid marine power (HMP) technology uses an electric drive boasting the range and power of hydrocarbon or alternative fuels.

The vessel also packs National Semiconductor’s analog-based SolarMagic technology, maximizing the power output of the solarsail system. So what makes this water-vessel special? Fuel savings, zero emissions, power redundancy, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and a whole lot more. A few more vessels like these in the sea could help keep the waters clean and unpolluted.
