The longest renewable energy evening ski trail system in North America

    ski_trail_system.JPG
When temperatures plunge, only ardent skiers would actually itch to venture outdoors and hit those snow-clad slopes. And the more adventures ones try their skills after dusk. Guided by the headlamps, skiers glide over the long stretch (about 5km) of solar powered lights on this trail. And that’s exactly what brings the Bogus Basin Nordic trails on Greenlaunches. This solar light system is an interesting draw and a fabulous example of the use of green energy for such a winter sport. It also bags the honor of being the longest renewable energy evening ski trail system in North America. So when the sun goes down and most of the ski resorts send everyone home until the lifts start again in the morning, you can indulge in some night fun by zipping past slopes that are lit with green energy at Bogus Basin.

Eco-friendly Toy – Amphibian Rover sails on recycled plastic bottles

    Amphibian_Rover.jpg
These days, even the toys manufactured for kids are being ruled by the eco-wave. Makers are pushing the idea of recycling, especially with clear plastic bottles which are difficult to recycle. In order to educate the young generation to be compassionate towards their planet, toys like 4M Amphibian Rover play a significant role. For $17, Playwell Enterprises has come out with a kit that will help the children to shape up a cool-looking rover that can go on water or land. All that is needed is four plastic or water or soda bottles that will play the role of wheels for the rover. Due for release in the coming March, the Amphibian Rover is meant for children aged 8 years and more. So next time think twice before dumping those bottles in the trash! This eco-friendly toy was also on display at the recent 69th annual Canadian Toy and Hobby Fair, Toronto.

Barack Obama’s portrait recycled out of 2000 postage stamps

    obama-stamp-portrait.jpg
Newly sworn Barack Obama has earned a reputation as the Green President since some time now. But little did we know that he has fans with the same eco-attitude from other continents too. A 65 year old artist, Pete Mason, has come up with a green art-work to celebrate Obama’s victory. A resident of Gordon Brown, UK, the artist has crafted out a 3ft by 4 ft image of the current President by recycling 2,000 postage stamps. And with the help of generous stamp donors from UK as well as U.S, the artist, also known as Post Pop Art Man, managed to stick out Obama against the American flag backdrop. This stamped portrait will be on display at the Art Lounge in The Mailbox in Birmingham.

Solar-powered trash cans speak out directions to loos in Shanghai

    Shanghai.jpg
Where else can you find speaking garbage bins with a touch of green element, but in China. It is reported that ten solar powered, speaking trash bins are put up at People’s Square, Shanghai. Powered by sun’s energy, the bins are modified to give out verbal instructions about the where about of closest two toilets, via electronic voice, to pedestrians. So next time when you are in Shanghai and you need to answer nature’s call in hurry then instead of resorting to fellow pedestrians for directions to the loo, hunt for these helpful green bins. Soaking in the solar energy, the bins can also guide the lost locals or tourists with an illuminated map. Being touted as China’s first of the solar powered garbage bins, in all 480 such cans will be placed at various locations in the near future.

RIWEA the robot inspects wind turbine blades with precision

    RIWEA_Inspector_Gadget.jpg
Colossal colonies of lofty wind turbines churn out gusty energy that renders freedom from the grids. Putting them up is a task that needs expertise no doubt, but it’s the maintenance that requires more skill. Last month I came across a picture that showed a man slithering down a cable from a helicopter on to a wind turbine to carry out repair work. Man that was a scary! But researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF) have found a robotic solution to this elevated challenge. They have developed a new robot that inspects wind energy converters and detects the minutest damage even below the surface. RIWEA, the robot hauls itself up a rope foot by foot until it reaches a wind turbine’s giant rotor blades. Shaped out of glass fiber reinforced plastics.

Obama 2009 Green Inaugural Ball sets the ball of green economy rolling

    Green_Inaugural_Ball.jpg
The whole world watched the first African American President take his oath to become the 44th President of America. But how many of us wondered how green the whole event was. Though I am still clueless about the green rating of the Inauguration or Oath ceremony, here is a report on the Obama 2009 Green Inaugural Ball that took place the previous night (January 19th) to honor the President Elect and his new administration. With such a large event, it’s a challenge to keep up with the green status. Recycling and reusing the waste, offsetting carbon footprint, Led lighting, controlled paper usage and using recycled paper for printing material are a few of the green features. However the highlight was the Green Carpet that greeted the guests.

    Cthulhu_1.jpg
As the weekdays steers towards weekend, take a break with this cute solar powered bugbot, dubbed Cthulhu that promises to vibrate your funny bone with a green style. Only if you managed to pronounce its name correctly you can move further to read about its weirder personality. This solar powered octopus soaks in all the sunlight and starts wobbling all over the place. Though it seems to be an entertaining plaything, this bugbot can be a scary thing for kids or folks with weak nerves. And what’s more nervy is that it silently soaks in the light from indoor fixtures too. When full on energy, out of the blue, he will simply wiggle out of its position and scare the hell out of people sitting around. For $80, you can order the Cthulhu from Etsy and enjoy playing pranks on fellow colleagues or siblings.
