• NREL develops energy-efficient and eco-friendly air conditioner to blow the heat away

  • NREL-efficient-air-conditioner.jpg Summer time woes include sweaty foreheads and heavy electricity bills. Well, you can wipe that forehead of yours and welcome a cheaper electricity bill, if the air-conditioner you use bothers to diet and do away with those age old mechanics. At least that’s what the National Renewable Energy Laboratory thinks. The guys at the NREL recently unveiled a design for an air-conditioner that keeps out those energy sucking compressors and condensers that promises an energy use cut-off of around 75%. Jaw hanging open already? Get a hold of this.

Using an evaporative cooling system, the air conditioner creates cool air by evaporating water from a wet surface with a fan, and combines the cooler with a desiccant to make dry air. Which means you can control your room temperature better, with a system like this. Water passing through one air stream turns cool and wet cooling another membrane that in turn cools an air stream, without using water. The desiccant also absorbs water from the air to decrease humidity and cool. Is this a cheaper way to cool ourselves in summer? Hopefully!
