Ace Diamond Mine shows off solar powered hammer

The solar powered hammer is the work of a local artist. This kinetic solar sculpture will be at the Ace of Diamond mine on Route 28 in Middleville. This is part of an ongoing project of artist Betsy Alwin who has been working at the Sculpture Space in Utica. This was initially conceived from the geology of diamonds and the development of their worth. After hours of observation, the artist found that the act of hammering away by the miners was hypnotizing and its repetition was becoming obsessive or compulsive. This actually inspired the artist to make the hammer machine. The machine is made from found materials and is powered by the sun.
