Microbial fuel cells use waste water to generate green energy

Not everything is waste. Not even sewage water! Today, waste water has multiple uses, with nuclear power plants using treated waste water, cities switching to toilet to tap technologies and breweries using waste water to generate biogas. Not too far away in the future, waste water-powered batteries might just help power up our homes and lighten up our streets too! Microbial fuel cells that rely on wastewater bacteria are currently being developed by environmental engineer Bruce Logan.

For now though, these cells don’t really generate enough energy to satisfy the thirsty grids, though in future, with the tide of technology rising like never before, we expect these to be an answer to all our power woes!
