DIY – A geeky photo frame recycled from a waste keyboard

    geeky_geetu_photo_frame.jpg
One of my colleagues, Geetu, whose areas of interest are Luxury and Girly Gadgets has been bitten by the green bug. She decided to shape up a keyed picture frame to lock the memories of her loved ones. And here is her share of story – ‘I had a non working keyboard lying in the house and didn’t know what to do with it until got inspired by the green sites and thought of making this geeky photo frame. All you need for it is some waste cardboard/thermocol, glue and keyboard buttons. Unscrew the keyboard and push all the buttons out (this is the most enjoyable part). Then according to the buttons size make holes in the base and finally set all the buttons. This part will require lots of patience. Finally an awesome green-geeky photo-frame is ready.’ This is certainly inspirational for kids too. It will also help to educate them that we can put such things to used instead of seeing them off to e-waste landfills.
    Thanks Geetu

Netherlands researchers find way to recycle thermoset plastics

    thermoset_plastic.jpg
Recycling is now not a trend anymore, it is becoming a necessity. In the Netherlands, researchers have been working day and night to get some of the world’s main problems solved namely finding ways to convert non-recyclable thermoset plastics to be recycled. Normally thermoset plastics unlike thermoplastics can’t be remolded once heated, they only decompose. Chemists at the University of Groningen have created a thermoset plastic that can be reformed when heated.

Recycled wall green pockets to hold flowers or plants

    Recycled_wall.jpg
When people have visions for their house, they want to make a perfect atmosphere to feel very much at home. Some people go out of their ways to make ideas for such people so that they can have their perfect dream home or office or habitat. At the 2009 Milan Furniture Fair, Maruja Fuentes’ green pockets aka houseplant made of recycled materials was spotted. This is a collection of ceramic tiles attached to any wall to create the illusion that whatever’s inside—herbs, plants, a flower or two—is growing directly out of a room’s surface.

Huge chandelier recycled out of plastic to show its wastage

    harvey-chand.jpg
If you have the money, the sense of design and the heart to save the world, you can work wonders. As is proven by artist Katherine Harvey who created a huge 21 foot tall, 15 foot wide chandelier installed at the Santiago Calatrava’s Galleria in Toronto. She made this by transforming plastic recyclable containers into a massive chandelier. It doesn’t look very pretty but this wasn’t apparently made to look pretty but to send out a message on the horrors and the evil of plastic consumption.

Recycled art – Green ideas from young students to help environment

    Children's_talent.jpg
We’ve been harping about serious green products and technology since some time now. Allow me to bring your attention to something lighter yet greener. Sixty five students of the Ocean View Elementary School put up an exhibition of robots, different types of animals and an iPod out of recycled items at the Recycle Art Show. They used materials like plastic, paper, cork and Styrofoam. The body of a music-playing gadget was made from a plastic baby food container, sticky notes, string and two bottle caps. Another kiddo made a dog using 12 diet Coke cans, construction paper and tin foil. A lot of children joined hands in showing adults what they could do if they properly used their brains and did something to help the environment rather than mess it up.

    Recyclable, reusable pizza box

    greenbox.jpg
What is an environmentally friendly pizza box? It is something that is recyclable and shaped in such a form that it can be cut into four different parts that will give the pizza buyer the option of not using plates and use the recyclable cardboard as a plate. And if you want to save some of the slices, you can do that on a triangular piece also available with the same recyclable box. Do you know what ALL this wonderful and brilliant piece of discovery can do? It reduces your dish washing detergent usage! Now you can stuff your kitchen with all the dish washing detergent you want!

Solar powered Skybox LoPro car-top luggage box made of recycled materials

    yakima-rooftop-box.jpg
It used to be a sight. Once we reach the airport, everyone’s scurrying around to grab their luggage, hail their parked vehicles and then the work begins. Five people on each side will be tugging at luggage and ropes to manage the huge pile of suitcases and cardboards filled with goodies from the gulf. That’s the sight I used to see when I went back home. Now a designer named James Owen has introduced something called as the Yakima Skybox LoPro which is a luggage holder to be strapped on top of the four wheelers made of 50 per cent recycled material.

Discarded Sony PlayStations recycled into Reee Chair

    recycled_Reechair.jpg
Most of us don’t give a thought to what happens to the gaming consoles after we discard them for newer upgraded versions. But a UK-based company Pli Design Ltd. has found a greener life for those units after they finish playing their role of gaming consoles. The company convinced Sony to allow hem to recycle the PlayStations in to the Reee Chair. The polycarbonate abs (PC/ABS) plastic material used in the Sony PlayStation had everything to do with the way the Reee chair was designed. The current formula calls for the Reee chair to use plastic from nine recycled Sony PlayStation 2 consoles. That can be calculated in to a green equation – each chair reduces 2.4 kg of plastic from adding up to a landfill. Pli expects to ship 3,000 chairs in the next year, representing 7.5 tons of recycled plastic.
