Canadian professor uses infected beef parts to create plastic

    cow-face.jpg
A short while ago, the Canadian beef industry was struck with the deadly mad cow disease, contaminating meat due to which, beef parts were thrown away and ended up in landfills by the ton. David Bressler, an associate professor with the institution’s Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science however is busy working on creating plastics from these waste parts of beef to keep them out of landfills. The process Bressler has been working on uses proteins from cow parts that are broken down under high temperatures and made to re-link with other molecules to create plastic!

And what better place could there be, to shed some green on the minds of the young, than school! The Sierra Club took the initiative recently, to draw up a list of the greenest schools around, that they hope will help inspire and have those not on the list, strive hard to make it there too! The top 20 list tops off with the University of Washington, followed by the Green Mountain College and the University of California, San Diego.

Tesco pull back claimed-environment-friendly degradable bags

    Tesco_biodegradable_bags1.jpg
Tesco finally realized, that the biodegradable bags the chain had hooked up to recently are potentially more life-threatening to the environment than any of us would imagine! Going bright red in the face, the store chain has cut-off giving out these biodegradable bags, given that they ideally take about 20 to 35 months to decompose, or so thought Tesco. Take those months and do the math, with Tesco giving out more than two billion of these bags a year, and we’re pretty sure you’re going to fall out of your chair too, just the way did, and Tesco did!

Films on Fridges gives junked discarded cold boxes a whole new meaning

    Films-on-Fridges-1.jpg
Britain got a whole new pop-up cinema and one that’s inspired by a load of garbage. Called Films on Fridges, the project is the brainchild of 25-year-old American Lindsey Scannapieco, who got the idea from London’s famous Fridge Mountain. Essentially an art installation, the project is an outdoor venture with fridges playing the lead, second lead and crowd role – the screen is surrounded by fridges, the bar is made of fridge parts, and fridge doors are used in seating arrangements.

Illuminated LEDoorHandle powers up with the twisting motion of the door knob

    LEDoorHandle2.jpg
Finding your way out or into a room during blackouts can get tricky, especially if you aren’t too used to carrying a little torch around. Most of us tend to use those feeble backlights of our mobile phones at times like these too, and if the phone sports a flash, that does double up as a torch. Designers Kun-hee Kim, Kei Shimizu & Nguyen-vu Dang however have come up with a unique design called the LEDoorHandle that seems to be an answer to blackout woes. This one basically works as an illuminated door handle that sports sensors, illuminating when the lights go out. And to power up, these handles generate energy from the twisting motion of the door knob.
