Studies conducted by the department of physics of the University of Turku claim that the report submitted International Panel on Climate Change, which says that carbon dioxide emissions are solely responsible for global warming, is erroneous. According to their analysis, man-made CO2 emissions are only responsible for 5-10% of the total global warming observed. This value is only one-tenth of what the IPCC’s report claims it to be.

The volcanic eruption in Iceland, which disrupted air travel in Europe, began a few months ago through a series of fissures which had developed on the eastern side of the volcano. According to experts, volcanic eruptions give out a large amount of sulfur and related compounds such as sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. These compounds reflect sunlight, thus causing an overall cooling in the climate of the entire region. The sulfur dioxide also creates smog. The ash that is released during these eruptions is spread out at high altitudes where it can cause damage to the aircrafts due to the abrasive silicate compounds present in it.

If you rely on the US Postal Service for your snail mail delivery, you probably won’t receive any on a Saturday, thanks to global warming. Probably another effort to save up on costs, the dying postal service could do with the power grid connection we reported on before. Anyways, this proposal of a Saturday off will help the USPS cut CO2 emissions by around 503,000 metric tons per year.

The US military is all set to go green, greener than their camouflages that is. The US military will save up around $1.6 billion if they adhere to more energy efficient standards. The military has already taken a few steps towards energy efficiency. Spraying foam insulation on military tents in Iraq and Afghanistan, soaking in the suns energy with solar panels, and HVAC upgrades are a few of the efforts the military is taking to be a greener force. Environmental benefits, in hand with national security are the cause of these measures being undertaken.

You probably have had your battery-powered remote-controlled monster truck drive up your street before. Well, some kids in the Long Beach area built their own toy emote-control vehicles and had them go solar powered instead, and lined them up for a race amidst cheers and applause at the Good Neighbor Park. The 5th District Solar and Sustainability Task Force and Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske came up with the idea of this race. These kids racked their brains and built the cars themselves, with parts and material provided.

When many people started complaining that the channels on their TV were automatically flipping, most of them having Samsung set-top boxes supplied by Virgin Media, it took a long time to figure out that this unnatural phenomenon was being caused due to infrared rays being emitted by low energy bulbs which interfere with the sensor. While most of the people who have been having this problem say that it is solved when there aren’t any of these bulbs in the same room, some still complain that even though the bulb is in a different room, the IR rays do interfere. It has been observed that this problem is caused only due to a particular low energy bulb from Philips. A Philips executive maintains that this problem only exists in older CFLs.
