The pacific island state of Tuvalu has a set a goal to be 100% dependent on renewable source of energy by the year 2020. It is hoping to set up an example for industrialized nations on how to cut greenhouse gases which it blames on rising sea levels. Tuvalu has a highest point of only 4.5 meters above sea level. The state has estimated that it will cost them only 20 million dollars to generate all the electricity it needs for its population of 12,000 from the sun and wind and end its dependence on diesel. Tuvalu is just one of the many low lying islands in the Pacific, Indian Ocean and the Caribbean which could be wiped off from the face of the planet because of rising sea levels. They want the governments to agree to a strong new UN deal in Copenhagen in December to slow climate change. Tuvalu’s annual emissions of the heat-trapping carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas from burning fossil fuels, are just 0.4 ton per inhabitant against more than 20 per American and they consume around 5000 liters of diesel per day.
