Lithium ion batteries are no longer destined to live in your mobile phones and laptops. They’re up for a bigger future. Big enough to steady the New York electricity grid! Truck-sized batteries working in a group will help deliver quick bursts of power to the electricity grid as AES Energy Storage, a subsidiary of power generating company AES has finally started up the first 8 megawatts of a planned 20-megawatt battery grid storage system. The project will finally complete by the end of the year and help balance between energy supply and demand. The batteries will store energy and at peak hours will deliver required energy if need by the grid operators. The batteries are less polluting than fossil fuel plant generators and also respond quickly.

Indeed a fantastic move by the city of New York to help stabilize energy flow through grids, these batteries will work just fine.
