• Madrid parking meters charge polluting cars more

  • madrid-parking-metersThe authorities in Madrid have come up with a new way to make gas guzzlers go red in the cheeks. The city has done away with its regular parking meters, to make way for new “smart” meters. These intelligent devices charge higher parking fees to vehicles that are polluting and drink excessive liters of fuel.

Once parked, drivers are prompted to enter their license plate number on a keypad on the meter. These meters are hooked up to Spain’s vehicle-registration database. The meter then recognizes the car’s age and model, giving fuel-efficient cars a 20% discount and polluting vehicles a surcharge of 20%! Good move Madrid!
