China’s Volt-like BYD F3DM electric sedan is not impressive
Not every thing green sells on our blue Earth! At least that is case of the China made EV BYD F3DM. Touted to be a Volt copy, the F3DM was also seen as a threat to other US made electric cars. More so because the company makes its own proprietary LiFePO4 battery and can currently sell the car for a US equivalent of $22,000. Now that too much money when converted in to Chinese currency. Also the lack of charging stations and non-supporting government policies are playing the role of speed-breakers for its success in China. This plug-in e-sedan needs nine hours to charge from home. Also the promised 60 miles of range can be achieved only if it is driven under 50 km/h (31 mph). Compare it to GM’s high-quality and extensively tested Chevy Volt and you will surely find many loops.
Since its launch in December 2008, only 80 F3DMs have left the company's ground. Of these 20 are with the Chinese government. Guess, lowering the cost of production may help to boost sales. It is also known that Warren Buffett has invested in the company and there exists the potential of eventually selling the car in the US.
