E-waste heaps are rising sky-high and daunting our environment by releasing toxins in the air. An estimated 133,000 computers are discarded by homes and businesses every day in America! To tackle this menace of reckless e-waste dumping, a 16 foot tall and 60 foot long man-made monster is set up in Islandia, N.Y. This mammothic shredder at e-Scrap Destruction chews on to all the cast off computers and its peripherals, printers, fax machines and also cell phones with its steel blade jaws. The components are reduced to rubble that contains pieces lesser than four inches. This shredded material goes back on the belt, where an overhead electromagnet removes material containing iron as the waste moves along. Trace Feinstein, the founder of e-Scrap Destruction was determined to handle the scrap more responsibly. The folks at e-Scrap also respect customers’ privacy and ensure that no personal or confidential data can be recovered from hard drives or memory.

Around the world in the Solar Taxi to leave eco footprints

Most people excuse themselves from their responsibility towards our planet by believing that one person’s deed cannot change the world. I am annoyed by such a callous attitude and certainly believe in Mother Theresa’s words – “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. And Louis Palmer from a town Lucerne, in Switzerland, too holds the same thought. Since the young age of fourteen, Louis has been nursing this dream of being the first person to travel across the globe in a solar powered vehicle. Last year, 3 July 2007, he managed to materialize his dream and set off in his solar taxi. Since he didn’t come across any such commercial vehicle in the market, the guy built his own version to fulfill his dream and make a point to the world. Fitted with highly efficient solar cells and its ZEBRA High-Energy Battery, the Solar taxi hits the road powered in broad daylight.

Many of us would love to swap our current dependence on the electric girds with the free solar energy. However the cost to set up a system big enough to power a whole house with sun’s energy is daunting and cripples the idea of getting liberated. But when the government steps in to assist such a cause, the citizens can boast of solar powered dens without much economical fuss. Located in midst of strawberry fields, one of Japan’s sunniest spots, Ota City’s tiny Pal Town received free solar panels from 2002. The government sanctioned a 9.7 billion yen for a study on how to ensure a steady supply and avoid blackouts. Dubbed as Solar City, about three-quarters of this town’s homes are covered by solar panels.

Sine water conservation has become as essential as energy conservation; we can see an upsurge in gadgets that help us to keep a tab on the volume of water used while soaking under the shower. Designer Jia Yi Lin has conceptualized an exceptional product, dubbed Liquid Tree, to present the real data of water waste. Users can interact with the Liquid Tree display, and receive the feedback from it. Inspired by Brendan Dawes’s Book “Analog in, digital out: Brendan Dawes on interaction design”, and the art of ink bleeding on the paper, Jia was also inspired by form of iPod to shape up this water saving device. As of yet, it is designed to measure the hot water wastage only. However in the future, it can be tweaked to measure cold water too.

Times are changing and so are the trends. Moving over the two and four-wheelers, the future of the roads is going to be dominated by three-wheelers. Though we don’t see many of them in the present, companies like Piaggio promise a clean green three wheely ride in the near future with their latest plug-in hybrid three-wheeler. The Italian manufacture’s hybrid MP3 scooter will churn out up to 141 mpg (that is 60 kilometers on a liter of gas). Powered by a 125-cc gasoline engine along with an electric motor, it is powerful enough to zoom from 0-60 mph in about 5 seconds.

Soda cans recycled to fit eco-diva’s lingerie collection

The used, empty soda cans in my house find their straight into the dustbin. However sometimes I save up one or two for my toddler’s ‘Best out of Waste’ project. She loves to decorate such cans into pen stands or comb stands with all the craft material. Pushing aside such kindergarten-aged recycling attempts, Designer Ingrid Goldbloom Bloch has moved up further to shape a set of adult lingerie from recycled soda cans. Inspired from a very young age to do something green, Ingrid presented the most unusual eco-friendly set of underclothes for a eco-diva. If filthy rich women can display their wealth by flaunting gold and diamond studded under garments, then eco-conscious babes can stand up to flaunt their love for our environment with such a recycled set. I am sure such a green set of underwear isn’t actually wearable. But the red and silver combi certainly kicks out a hot and bold ‘green’ style!
