Everyday, the blogosphere is buzzing with news of the launch of latest, multi-featured cell phones from all over the world. However Julia Schlegel is swimming against the tide to design a cell phone that can only be used to make a call. Targeting the under developed countries, the designer’s sole focus was to build up the communication network. And hence the product got its name, SoleCall. This economical, solar powered communicating device is sans any frilly features like MP3 player, camera or even text messaging. Sporting only the most fundamental number buttons and one single On/Off button, the SoleCall is crafted out of plastic and rubber. Though such raw materials are affordable and help to protect the phone dust and falls, they may generate negative points on the eco front. Since energy consumption is the most vital concern in such areas, this cell phone is designed to get its juice from the abundance of sun’s energy. The rear of SoleCall is plastered with solar cells for the same.

With the irrational exploitation of water, the future of water doesn’t seem to be promising. And that’s exactly why the topic for the Whirlpool 2008 Contest was “Future of Water”. A student from Mexico conceptualized the Re-Cycle Laundry Center Design for the same with winning features. The designer was inspired by the universal recycling logo to give shape this project’s form. And hence the name too! Though the system consists of three identical drums, they differ in functions. The first two make up for the usual washing machine components, one is a washing drum and the other is the dryer. However it’s the third one that functions as a filter and a water tank to recycle the used water. It has been designed to reuse the water as well as the steam from the first cycle.

A stroller is essential for infants and their parents to push them around the streets with ease. Such an infant accessory doesn’t need any extra frills other than the basic sturdy structure and comfortably padded and secured seat. But designers are cashing on to the parent’s whim for extraordinary stuff by presenting strollers tweaked with gadgets and pimped with precious metals and gemstones. Currently, our eco-blogoshpere is also buzzing with a green stroller. Not much is revealed about this Solar powered Stroller. But going by the pictures it can be determined that this all white stroller has a solar roof stretched over the seat. I am sure that this green roof will protect the child from the harmful rays of the sun but what’s got me puzzled is the need of solar panels on a stroller. To charge parent’s gadgets on the go? Or to charge the little prince/princess’s lullaby strumming music player? What ever it is, the designer certainly let his green thumb loose with this solar powered stroller!

A trip in space may actually seem to be out-of-this-world for all of us. But for the natives of space, it isn’t as hunky-dory as it seems to us, sitting here on this planet and sipping onto a glass of clean water. Residents of Space Station will have to quench their thirst by sipping on to their urine, which of course will be recycled to make it 100% potable. A $250 million system is exclusively designed to ionize, filter, distill, and oxidize the wastewater. It was reported that folks aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour will be handing off to their Space Station colleagues this water regeneration system. As of yet, the astronauts will only be testing the system and not drinking on this trip. When on earth, the system showed excellent results, but NASA wants to be sure that it works, as designed, in a zero-gravity environment too.

Most of us fit blinds over our windows to keep the light and heat out through the day, along with the need of privacy. However Korean designers Yoon-Hui Kim and Eun-Kyung Kim have come up with an innovative usage of the blocked heat and light. Dubbed as the Solar vertical lamp, they have designed the blinds such that the outer surface that faces the sun is fused with solar pads. These pads absorb sun’s energy through the day and as the sun sets, this stored solar energy is utilized to light of the darkness of your den. Befitted with Led fixtures, the blinds give rise to integrated light lamps. The duo have presented three options of light fixtures too chose from. The stylish chandelier is best suited for the living room while the floor lamp can go in the study. The table lamp can light up bed side reading times. Cool light concept powered by hot energy!

Though there are varied applications of Styrofoam, the most common ones any layman can identify with are disposable coffee cups and as coolers or packaging material. However this non-degradable product adds on to our landfills, raising environment concerns. To combat this eco-problem, Coldpack has come up with a green, resourceful inflatable, insulating cooler liner for packaging purpose. The new eco-friendly material, AirLiner, requires half the raw materials, water, and energy to produce compared in comparison to styrofoam. Also the alarming amount of trash can be eliminated and landfill impact can be reduced by as much as 19.1 billion cubic feet per year. This nifty material is not only a fantastic insulator but also renders 400 percent more cushioning than styrofoam. The key to AirLiner’s ability to cushion, protect and maintain constant temperature is its award-winning, patented internal heat-barrier technology.
