Honda is all ready to showcase its next-generation electric small sports concept model called the EV-STER at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011. The car is the evolution of the electric supercars we have today, and could probably be the greenest and fastest way to drive in the future. A two-seat convertible, this one sports a 160km range and uses carbon materials for the body to keep its weight minimal. Also, the car sports a futuristic twin-lever type steering wheel, making it seem more like flying a jet than driving an extraordinarily pretty sports car! With a maximum speed of 160kmph, the car touches the 60mph mark in just below 5.0 seconds and takes between 3 to 6 hours to charge up, depending on the output type.

The car sharing program I-GO in Chicago recently unveiled plans for 11 solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations in the Chicago area and as part of a $2.5 million electric vehicle project, I-GO will host 36 all-electric vehicles with 18 publicly-available solar charging stations for the fleet. This is one of the few car-sharing programs in the Midwest to use solar power to charge up its cars and using grants from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), the Chicago Area Clean Cities Partnership and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, the I-GO project is looking to complete work by 2012.

We’ve stumbled across the sailing exploits of the PlanetSolar before. The solar-powered vessel on an around-the-world voyage has now made a pit stop in India, at the Aguada Bay in Goa! The vessel will then continue its journey through the seas along the Arabian Peninsula, the Red Sea and finally the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal. Currently waiting for the weather to clear up, the MS Turanor PlanetSolar will then head to Mumbai after which it’ll continue its journey.

When two automobile giants, Toyota and Yamaha come together, the world expects great things, and the companies haven’t failed to match up with those expectations! Together, Yamaha and Toyota will pull the veil off two commuter concept vehicles that have been designed on the lines of electric scooters and e-bikes. The two vehicles, the three-wheel EC-Miu and the PAS-WITH e-bike will both blend into smart-grid by Toyota, the Smart Center. Using the Smart Center systems, uses of these vehicles can locate the nearest charging center, pay for a shot of electric juice and also keep up with vehicle diagnostic information.

It’s a known fact that those tractor trailers you see rumbling down highways drink more fuel than a couple of average mid-sized cars put together. And this isn’t economical to say the least. Mercedes Benz decided to give those massive rigs a greener touch and unveiled the Aero-trailer concept. Using a front airdam, side trim panels rear diffuser, and a tapered rear design that adds up to an 18 percent reduction in wind resistance, these when coupled with average tractor trailers helps save a whopping 2,000 liters of diesel a year! Also, these aerodynamically designed trailers help pull down carbon emissions too, making tractor trailers greener than they’ve ever been before.

Take an electric car, give it a blast from the past, and you’d probably end up with something like this! Called the Lightening, this electric car by EnviroTech sports a 56V DC electric racing motor that enables it to go well above the 100mph mark. Also, this one touches the 60mph mark in below 5 seconds and uses 13 12V Delco deep cycle batteries that give the Lightening a 40 mile range on a full belly. Also, the car is available off the shelf as individual components, just in case you prefer building your rides by your own hands. All in all, the Lightening might sure not look like those space-age electric supercars we’ve seen rolling out these days, though this little electric reminiscent of past racers sure packs a load of oomph too!

Sailing usually is a pretty lazy affair where the wind takes you around as per its moods and fancies, and at times simply decides to abandon you, leaving you stranded on a sail boat in the middle of a lake. The Vestas Sailrocket 2 however is a load different from your average sailing vessel and is engineered and crafted specially to meet the requirements to beat the sailing speed record. With the previous record marked at 55.65 knots in Namibia, the Sailrocket 2 is keen on crashing past that 64mph mark and is currently in Namibia preparing for the same. Also, this incredible feat will highlight the use of a renewable energy source as the wind for water-bound vessels.

As you read this, four robots are flying over land and seas from the Silicon Valley towards Australia and Japan in a bid to break a record as well as help bring the scientific world a level of data of oceans that has never been attained. The Wave Gliders built by Liquid Robotics hopes to set the Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled on the surface of the Earth by a robot. These robots are autonomous and self-powered. They are designed to move by “flapping” wings that are propelled by wave action. Further more their various sensors are powered by solar.

The city of Baltimore will now proudly play home to its first bike-sharing program with Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has announced making the official announcement of the same. B-Cycle, a bike sharing company, has been approved off to start kick off the program in an attempt to have the citizens leave their gas-guzzling modes of transportation at home and settle for cleaner, greener and more eco-friendly transportation. 30 stations will be installed across the city with a total of about 250 bikes by the next fall at an estimate cost of $1.2 million, an amount to be raised by B-Cycle itself.

If you’ve been a “Back to the Future” geek, you’re bound to recognize this iconic vehicle, the DeLorean. Built by the DeLorean Motor Company in association with Epic EV, this iconic car however sports a green difference from the original that featured in the films, and uses electricity to power up. using an AC induction liquid-cooled electric motor with 260 horsepower, this electric DeLorean touches speeds of up to 125mph and touches 60mph in below 4.9 seconds. Also, the insides sport a bunch of technology upgrades including an iPhone dock and GPS navigation while from the outside, it sticks to the good old retro DeLorean look we’ve all come to love, with the iconic gull wing doors.
